Evangelizing the Heart: Outreach to Family Member

Guest Blogger, Emilou Ilagan

As believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, God has given us a heart and compassion to the lost and the hurting. More often than not, our focus is to reach out to those who are in the bars, prisons, hospitals, and for missionaries, to the remotest tribes of the earth.

However, we do not need to look far to find a mission field or go somewhere distant to evangelize and share the love of Jesus. Our own immediate and extended families need salvation, too.

In every Christian’s heart is a missionary and every person is a mission field. Jesus commissioned the disciples:

“But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

This means that like the disciples, we need to be witnesses to our families and relatives first (Jerusalem) before we evangelize other people.

There are moments in life that we need our hearts to be evangelized even though we are already believers. Yes, we have received the healing and saving knowledge of Christ but there are parts of our hearts that need healing, freedom, restoration, and redemption.

Being a Christian does not mean that we are exempted from all the trials and tribulations in the world. The more we are sold out for God, the more the testing and challenges we face on a daily basis. Even Jesus Himself promised us that:

“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]” (John 16:33)

To reiterate, there will be trials and troubles for sure. That is a guarantee on this earth but Jesus has already overcome. We are Christians, Christ lives inside of us so He has implanted in our entire being the empowerment to be an overcomer.

Personally, I was faced with tumultuous trials and tribulations for the past four years. It seems that all strength and hope are gone. I was tired surviving all the fiery darts of the enemy against my personhood and character. I lost everything I can hold onto and it’s only God who can deliver and set me free from my predicament.

Until this holiday season, my maternal aunt, uncle, and niece visited me and ministered to me in all aspects—spirit, soul, and body. The problems are not yet completely eradicated but God sent something like a balm of Gilead to comfort, bring relief, and loving compassion towards me.

God has healed parts of my heart needing restoration and unconditional love. Sometimes, people does not need our mind or opinion or pocket or rebuke, all a person needs is a heart like Jesus, His eyes to see people and their situation, His ears to listen to their pains, and His hands to comfort and restore.

Have you experienced the touch of God in your life? As if God blew His wind of refreshment and revival over you enough to make you go on and encourage someone who is in the same situation and help them get out of it?

Evangelism is not only salvation from sin, sickness, death, and hell. It is a complete package of healing, restoration, blessing, favor, and completeness and perfection (shalom) in our lives.

It is written in Psalms 138:8—

The Lord will perfect that which concerns me; Your mercy and loving-kindness, O Lord, endure forever—forsake not the works of Your own hands.

DeAnn E. from Grand Ledge, MI also reached out to her family and said:

“I am doing a Cousin Camp in a week and would like to use these Gospels of John on Sunday morning at "Church" in the barn to present the gospel to my campers (nieces & nephews) and counselors (my brothers and sisters). We will be riding horses as a part of our camp so the Horse cover "Let God Set you Free" will tie in well. I'm praying for the Spirit to use me and this tool to bring my family members to Christ.”

It’s not too late to share the Gospel and reach out to those in need in our family and extended families.

Do it now, you’ll never know what difference it can do to someone’s life today. Do not delay.
